My love for photography and family history brought me not once but twice to Scotland! I have utterly and completely fallen in love with it! So you will see many photographs along the way from my travels to Scotland. This photograph is a favorite of mine! This was one of those little gems that you HAD to be looking for or else you would have missed it off the the main road. As We were driving by my husband said no way are we driving in there, it is some ones driveway! And the photographer in me said “YES, we are driving in there, I don’t care if it is a private drive I want to see this castle! Yes, I was on vacation, and Yes, vacations to me means taking in as many photo opts as possible! I am sort of a photo junkie! So here is my little castle of the day = Castle Stalker!
Castle Stalker (Scottish Gaelic: Caisteal an Stalcaire) is a four-storey tower house or keep picturesquely set on a tidal islet on Loch Laich, an inlet off Loch Linnhe. It is located about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north east of Port Appin, Argyll, Scotland, and is visible from the A828 road around mid-way between Oban and Glen Coe. The islet is accessible (with difficulty) from the shore at low tide. The name “Stalker” comes from the Gaelic Stalcaire, meaning “hunter” or “falconer”, and should therefore be pronounced stal-ker, with the l sounded, not as in the pronunciation of the English word stalker.
But, many of you Monty Pythons fans – which I have been a fan since junior high, will know this castle for something else! The castle was brought to fame by the Monty Python team, appearing in their film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. This privately owned castle appears as “Castle Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh” at the end of the film!
