December 21st, 2012…the end of the world!

Is it the end of the world as we know it?

According to a Mayan ruin found in Coba, Mexico – December 21st 2012 is the end of … their Mayan Calendar that is!

I was fortunate to be photographing a wedding last fall in Playa del Carmen. Mexico and took a few days to myself and did some site seeing. I have always been intrigued by standing stones and the history that goes along with them.  So, I went to visit the ancient Mayan Ruins in Coba rather than Tulum.  I was pleasantly surprised as the tour guide came to these standing stones and explained the engravings on this particular one … that this is the actual Mayan ruin where they deciphered  “the end of the world”.

He also asked how many of us in the tour group were from US… I was the only one…. he said that Hollywood has scared most Americans to believing the world is coming to an end! And then proceeded to explain that it is telling us that the Mayan “calendar” is coming to an end, but the cycle will begin again, just like any other calendar.

So as today is the day! I thought I would share the ancient writing with you….

Stela 1 in the Macanxoc group at the ruins of Coba, Quintana Roo, Mexico. This famous stela bears the Long Count calendar date (3188 B.C.) of the beginning of the current Mayan era that will end in December 21st 2012. .
